The last thing we want to do when we’re sick is to make our dog sick. As a pet parent, nothing is more alarming than thinking we made our dogs sick with our cold.

At Coronado Pet Hospital, our vet clinic in Bernalillo knows how distressing it is when our dogs become sick. That’s why we want to help you better understand the differences between dog and human colds and when it’s time to call our clinic.

Do dogs catch colds?

Much like people, dogs catch colds too. In fact, dogs can experience the same type of cold symptoms that people experience. Here are some of the symptoms your dog may experience when sick with a cold virus:

  • Runny nose
  • Congestion
  • Watering eyes
  • Eye discharge
  • Coughing
  • Sneezing
  • Body aches

What kind of viruses cause colds in dogs?

There are species-specific viruses and bacteria causing colds in dogs. Some of these viruses can be prevented by having your dog fully vaccinated. Here are some common types of dog viruses and bacteria that cause colds:

Can dogs catch human colds?

Numerous viruses cause colds in humans. In general, almost all human viruses are species-specific, meaning you can’t transmit your cold to your dog.

Only under extremely rare circumstances would a human virus be transmissible to your dog. Despite this, it’s still almost impossible for your dog to catch your cold.

Can dogs catch human flu viruses?

There are species-specific strains of dog flu, such as canine influenza, but these aren’t derived nor transmitted from humans.

There have been reports published about dogs becoming infected with human flu viruses. While research is ongoing concerning human-to-dog flu virus transmission, it’s still considered uncommon for dogs to catch human flu viruses.

In all instances, it’s best to practice good hygiene, such as washing your hands frequently when you or your dog is sick.

When should I take my dog to a veterinarian?

Since cold symptoms can be similar to bacterial infection symptoms, it’s always best to have your dog seen by a veterinarian to rule out secondary infections or other health issues.

In extreme cases, or if your dog’s health is already compromised, your dog may develop pneumonia from severe infection.

Aside from the cold symptoms described above, you should take your dog to be seen by a vet if these symptoms are present:

  • Not eating and drinking their normal amounts
  • Harsh breathing sounds
  • Increased effort in breathing
  • Symptoms that don’t improve within 7-10 days

How can I make my dog comfortable while sick with a cold?

Always follow your veterinarian’s prescribed treatment and recommendations. You can also try some other things to help ease your dog’s symptoms.

If your dog’s nose is congested and they can’t smell their food well, you can try slightly heating their food to make it more aromatic. You can also try adding a topper like boiled chicken to encourage them to eat.

Try using a humidifier or have your dog rest in the bathroom with steam from a hot shower.

It’s crucial to note to never give your dog human medications. These medications can cause adverse effects while potentially damaging organs. Always contact a veterinarian before administering any medication to your furry friend.
